Journey

In 1909 Roald Amundsen's plans were to be the first person to reach the north pole but after hearing about Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claiming to have reached the North Pole he decided to go to the south pole instead,When he set out in June 1910, even most of his crew believed they were embarking on an Arctic journey not an Antarctic journey. The first icebergs were sighted on New Year's Day 1911 the great ice Barrier ( Ross ice shelf ) came into view on 11 January and on 14 January Fram was in the Bay of Whales. After Fram was anchored to ice in the south-eastern corner of the Bay, Amundsen selected a site for the expedition's main hut 1 km from the ship. On the 27th of January 1911 the hut was complete and was named Framheim "the home of Fram". On Oct 19 1911 Amundsen set out with 4 companions, 52 dogs, and 4 sledges. After encountering good weather, arrived at the South Pole on December 14 five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. The explorers recorded scientific data at the pole before beginning the return journey on December 17 and they safely reached their base at the Bay of Whales on Jan 25 1912. Scott in the meantime had reached the South Pole on January 17, but on a difficult return journey he and all his men died.
